Former contestant on The Bachelor, Emily Maynard, returns to TV as the star of this season’s The Bachelorette on ABC. Now she’s doing the picking.

So when you have 25 guys competing for one girl, you’ve got to do things to stand out, right? Last night’s premiere episode of The Bachelorette revealed the tricks that some of these guys have up their sleeves.

There was Jef, who showed up on a skate board and “casually” tossed it aside as he walked toward the bachelorette. There was Aaron, who led with this line: “I’m a high school biology teacher but I’m here to have chemistry with you.” And Stevie, who danced in carrying his own boom box. And Tony, who brought a glass slipper to slip onto the Bachelorette’s foot.

Which moments got the Bachelorette’s attention? Well, we don’t really know. But we do know which moments during last night’s episode got social media tweeting. More info below.

Season 7 of America’s Got Talent premiered last night on NBC. Which talented (or non-talented) acts got social media most excited? More info here…

The act that drove the most social activity was a guy named William Close who played a gigantic harp. The harp strings spanned the entire theater. Confusing? It makes more sense once you watch the video:

It’s interesting that two out of the top four most social acts already had significant online exposure prior to being on last night’s episode. The “Sexy Sax Man” has his own website, his own app in the iTunes store, and his top YouTube video has generated over 15M views.

And father-daughter singing duo, Jorge and Alexa Narvaez are practically YouTube legends at this point. Their YouTube channel has generated over 95M views. If you want a quick pick-me-up for your day, enjoy their performance from last night’s America’s Got Talent:

Last night, fans of the CBS hit How I Met Your Mother were treated to a special hour-long, two part season finale. There was a birth (accompanied by an epic middle name), a complicated magic-trick-turned-proposal, the return of an old flame, and a wedding that revealed something fans have been waiting for – the identity of Barney’s bride, If you missed the episode, Entertainment Weekly has a great recap here.

Here are a few highlights from Twitter during last night’s episode:

Social media conversation took off as the episode began, with fans eager to watch…

Mentally preparing myself for the awesomeness of the How I Met Your Mother season finale.

— Jake Dalson (@JakeDalson) May 14, 2012

There was a slight uptick in buzz when baby Eriksen’s middle name was announced…

Wait for It is the best idea for a middle name! Barney is a genius! #HIMYM @NLaidlaw4

— Tim Hanson (@Tim_Hans) May 15, 2012

As the finale ended and Barney’s future wife was revealed to be Robin, many fans rejoiced…

WOW I’M LITERALLY CRYING OK WOW OMG SO HAPPY #HIMYM #barneyandrobin #BarneysBrideUnveiled

(But of course, there are hazards to living in a social TV world…)

I would like to thank every single person on twitter who ruined #HIMYM for me by excessively tweeting the surprise until it trended.

The next couple weeks are packed with TV show finales. Last night New Girl, a comedy series on FOX, closed out its first season with strong social TV results. Receiving more than 38K social media comments, the finale was the second most talked about among the 24 season 1 episodes (the pilot was #1). The New Girl finale offered both comedic moments like when Jess yelled “meep meep!” at a coyote and also dramatic scenes that left viewers wondering whether Jess and Nick will eventually get together. Guess we’ll all have to wait until next season to find out.

Below are more details that highlight the finale and the full season.

If you watched the first hour and 45 minutes of last night’s The Voice finale on NBC, you knew two things: one, that Justin Bieber would be performing (it was promoted endlessly during the show) and two, that we would learn who wins Season 2 of The Voice (obvious).

But which moment during the show would drive more social TV activity? Justin Bieber hands down, right?…

It was a big surprise (to me at least) that while the Biebs drove a huge spike in social, the announcement of The Voice‘s Season 2 winner drove an even bigger reaction in social TV. Congrats to winner Jermaine Paul (@JermainePaul)!

Related: lots of celebrity royalty were tweeting about The Voice during the two-night Season Finale episodes. Here are a few…

Alicia Keys tweeted:

@JermainePauldeservesssss all of this!!!!! He has more talent in one hand….;-)))) congratulations brotha!!!!!!! Shine shine shine!!!!!!

Jordin Sparks tweeted too:

Congrats @JermainePaul! SO proud of you! YOU DID IT! I just screamed at the top of my lungs! Eedjskjsksk! @blakshelton TEAM BLAKE! TEAM JP!

American Idol Season 1 winner and mentor on The Voice this season, Kelly Clarkson, tweeted:

Hey everybody! Please vote for my boy @jermainepaul on the voice tonight! Go team Blake!!! WOOHOOOO!!!!

— Kelly Clarkson (@kelly_clarkson) May 8, 2012

And Reba McEntire too:

Be sure to tune in to The Voice tonite and vote for Jermaine Paul.

After 23 episodes, CBS’s 2 Broke Girls finished its first season last night. Throughout the season, the volume of social media comments for 2 Broke Girls experienced little variation (about 5K comments per episode). However, what’s interesting is the type of comments people share about this comedy series compared with that of a drama series such as Game of Thrones. What I’ve noticed is that more often than not, people who comment on 2 Broke Girls tend to share witty character quotes vs. reactions to the storyline. Here are a few examples of social media comments from last night’s finale:

Your breath smells like you went down on a brussel sprout.Lmfao! #twobrokegirls

— Sheila Goulet (@Turdface1) May 8, 2012

and

“Lady, you got a shoehorn? I gotta get two of these in one dress” #twobrokegirls THATS SO ME

The chestnut colt, I’ll Have Another, won the 138th Kentucky Derby this past Saturday. And the Kentucky Derby telecast won the day in social media: its 264K social media comments beat out the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA playoff game, which tallied 190K social media comments.

Two particularly interesting things I saw in the data:

1. Significant Y/Y growth – Continuing a trend we’ve seen in 2012, this year’s Kentucky Derby took a big leap in terms of social activity. This number of social media comments for this year’s telecast grew 633%, as compared to last year.

2. People stopped tweeting during the 2 minute race – People often ask us, “Does tweeting stop during major moments on TV?” The answer is that it really depends: what type of event is it, how long the “moment” lasts, cultural significance of the event, etc. But for the 2 minute stretch when the Kentucky Derby race actually took place, the answer is clear: tweeting slowed significantly. In the time line trend above, notice a spike at the start of the race, followed by steep drop-off for 2 minutes. And immediately after the race ended, tweeting activity immediately went through the roof.
