Super Bowl XLVI, the anticipated rematch between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants, made social TV history. With about 12.2M comments, Super Bowl XLVI is the largest social TV event ever recorded by far. The previous record holder was the MTV Video Music Awards (Aug 2011), which had 3.1M comments. Compared with last year’s Super Bowl, yesterday’s event experienced almost 600% growth!

Wow this was the most social Super Bowl ever. Personally, during this game I only used a few apps. This year I just had Twitter and Shazam on my phone and Coke’s polar bowl on my iPad. Sharing your favorite commercial spots and game moments are fun, but you don’t want to miss the rest while typing that.

Hi Katya, thanks for your comment. I’m curious about experience using Shazam during the Super Bowl – any pros/cons? I’ve seen a bunch of complaints on Twitter that it was really hard to use for a :30 advertisement, particularly because of the time requirements and noise levels people were experiencing. There definitely seems to be a fine line between second screen engagement enriching or distracting from an entertainment experience!
